After over two decades delivering uncompromising 'underground sonics' from a roster of some of drum & bass music's most impressive artists, Kasra Mowlavi and his Critical Music imprint have grown to be among the most respected names in electronic music.

An in-demand DJ since the label's earliest days, with a zealous belief in the record label as an art form in itself bolstered by a professional career in the wider music industry, it took until 2018 for Kasra to finally step up as a solo Critical artist in his own right.

Since taking his place among the acts he'd spent years cultivating and championing as a label boss, the Londoner has wasted little time in showing the world that his ear for good, honest music goes far beyond just A&R.

For Kasra, though, it's Critical that brings most satisfaction, enabling him to help fledgling producers follow the path he cleared and flourish as both producers and performers, via the record label and globe-hopping Critical Sound events.

"One of the most rewarding parts of my job is working with artists - to have the ecosystem to try to help them thrive and realise their ambitions," Kasra explains. "Now we have a new bunch of young artists who've joined the label and brought a different energy and I'm focusing more on making music. It really does feel like the next step... "I'm very conscious of being proud of what we've done, but it's not about looking back. I don't buy into the nostalgia thing. For me and for Critical, it's always about looking forward."
