MJ Cole: New Single 'Soak It Up'
MJ Cole and Kojey Radical partner on new single 'Soak It Up'.
The veteran producer is currently working out of The Gin Factory in London, a studio space that has become a hub for new voices and fresh talent.Striking up a partnership with Kojey Radical, the pair sketched out a few ideas, finding common ground between them.
New single 'Soak It Up' is the result, a piano-driven track that utilises some open, emotive lyricism from man-of-the-moment Kojey Radical.
MJ Cole explains...
"Emerging first as an instrumental, 'Soak It Up' grew surprisingly quickly. Improvising at the piano always leads somewhere fruitful for me. The original piano recording was noisy, but in a good way with the sound of the piano hammers and fingers on the keys really suggesting a warm, cosy musical situation.""The track starts out with a home-made sample and opens out into vocals from Kojey Radical which describe an ongoing relationship in turmoil. There's love in the song but also recognition of the gripes and annoyances on each side. It was a real vibe putting it together."

"Throughout the 14 or so years I've been remixing other artists music, one thing has remained constant: There is never one single approach that works better than another. The creative process can be a complete mystery, but being able to manage your creativity, even when things aren't quite going your way, is the only real skill one can have, I feel that's all I'm able to share with anybody else. I used to spend days, weeks, and sometime months going round in circles, and ending up nowhere. Looking back, those mixes were the ones in which I feel aren't my best. As a result, and through trial and error, I don't feel I became any better as a remixer, artist or producer, I just became better at making decisions, having confidence and trusting my instinct.
We've built a website which details the approach I took to 10 of my reworks, which were part of the 'Reworks Volume 1' compilation. You can listen to me talk about the technical and creative approach, as well as to my relationship with some of the artists who allowed me to mess with their work. Imagine it as 10 mini podcasts.
I hope this can help any of you who are starting out making music, or have an interest in the creative process, even if you're not familiar with my work."

Bryde: New Video For 'To Be Brave'
Bryde today reveals the video for new single 'To Be Brave'. Shot in Dungeness, a place that has held a great deal of fascination for the Welsh artist, she explores themes of retreat and solitude.
"I'm low-grade obsessed with Dungeness.
We spent three days moving about and chatting to a handful of residents about their experience of living or growing up in a remarkable landscape such as this and then asked them to feature in the video. There's a feeling of being a small dot on the horizon here and our aim was to honour the place as much as possible and highlight the striking landmarks and scale of the place while avoiding the clich s that have formed from the lifestyle magazine and fashion shoots that have been there before us.I also wanted the video to reflect one of it's subject matters about the way we present our lives via photographs on social media and how edited and selected they are and therefore never an entirely whole picture of reality. Ironically, we got rid of scenes in which I didn't think I looked particularly attractive."
Bryde releases her debut LP 'Like An Island' on the 13th of April via Seahorse Music, a label she set up to publish records by like-minded women to help make them more visible in a male-dominated industry.
'To Be Brave' is premiered in The 405.
